Chanel F/W 1991 “Hip Hop” runway jacket – FR 38

A highly collectable Chanel Boutique runway jacket from Karl Lagerfeld’s iconic Fall/Winter 1991 “Hip Hop” collection.

The collection saw Lagerfeld disrupt Chanel’s established codes through the energy and exaggeration of early-1990s street culture. Here, the house’s precise tailoring remains intact, but the proportions are sharper, the hardware louder and the attitude considerably less polite.

Crafted in France from structured olive wool, the jacket is shaped through the waist for a sharply defined silhouette. Contrasting black grosgrain ribbon outlines the neckline, front opening, cuffs and oversized flap pockets, creating a graphic framework across the military-toned body.

Large gold-tone buttons punctuate the design, each embossed with Chanel’s interlocking CC emblem and ornate rope-style detailing. The jacket is completed with a full silk lining and the black Chanel Boutique label reserved for the house’s principal ready-to-wear line of the period.

Documented on the original runway, this is not simply a jacket from the same season—it is a recognisable piece of the collection itself. The distinction is provenance, not just buttons.
